Happy World Turtle Day by PaganFireSnake Happy World Turtle Day by PaganFireSnake
Ba-Zinga, baby Painted Turtle (yes... there is such a species as a Painted Turtle...I DID NOT paint him...he is actually this color) and some daisies. :) It's World Turtle Day today so I had to get at least on nice photo with one of my turtles for it. And I opted to use this little cutie.:D

World Turtle Day is May 23rd each year and is celebrated throughout the world. It was started in 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue. Here is more info on it: [link]

The only thing I disagree with is the statement that buying a turtle/tortoise from a pet store will increase demand from the wild and the whole thing about the "cruel pet trade". That is NOT true! If you buy from "shady" pet stores, maybe, but the majority of the turtles you see as pets, in the US, are from breeders...NOT from the wild. All of the turtles I have are from reputable breeders. AND all of my turtles are WELL taken care of. It drives me a little crazy that some organizations group the majority of good owners with the few that have treated their pets badly. :/

I almost forgot about it too! But even though it has passed I will be holding a contest for it on my group :iconjustturtles:. If you like turtles you are welcome to join that group, if you aren't a part of it all ready. I'm still ironing out the particulars for the contest and if you have any ideas feel free to comment on the journal about it on the group.:D And glad you like Ba-Zinga. He is little cutie! :D

I'm not taking it personal...not in a way that b/c it was declined. I've had stuff declined before and if they at least give me a legitimate and honest reason I can respect that. I got ticked over this b/c I know this is a good photo and there is no reason to decline it other then them being jealousy, fanatics or just dumb for thinking I really painted him...or a combo of all of those things. It's stupidity like that, and fake/clicky people that drive me a little crazy. But whatever best of luck to them and I don't need people like that who are going to be that self-centered and big headed.

:D Yeah it was starting in 2000 by the American Tortoise Society and now it's a worldwide/international thing. Mostly to bring awareness to turtles and tortoises in general and their role in the ecosystem.:) I had forgotten about it...wish I remembered and I would have had some kind of contest for it on my :iconjustturtles: group. yeah. But sadly he got too big for the tank. We had to let him go to a pond where he could be free with other turtles.

Fun fact: I named him Alfie, after the tortoise in the Roald Dahl book Esio Trot (I'm a huge Roald Dahl fan :D)

I'm glad that you didn't just keep him for your own satisfaction. I am all for the keeping of turtles and other reptiles as pets but that is only if the person can properly care for them. I am sure he was very happy to be in the pond with other turtles.:D

And that's really cute for naming him after that tortoise.:D Most of my turtles and other reptiles are all named stuff like that. I love the sport NASCAR and quite a few have names after drivers, tracks, etc.:) My Hermann's tortoise I named Daytona after that race track.:D

he is adorable; and all the pet stores in Australia I have been to that sell turtles, sell them as babies straight from the breeders. (it is illegal to remove them from the wild anyway)

That is pretty much how it is in the US too. There are all ready regulations in most states with wild collecting and with the big number that are captive breed there is no reason to go out and catch one. The only issue with wild caught are those that are caught as a food source by a lot of Asian countries. It's NOT from the pet trade and I wish they would change that and not group it in the same category.
And thank you...he is a real cutie.:D

Beautiful photo. And I agree with you. Captive breeding programs that make these animals available to those who want them is the way to go. If they're not available through breeders, there will be animals taken from the wild.

Glad you like the photo.:D All of the Herptile Shows I have been too, every since turtle/tortoise there is captive breed. And there are always a bunch of turtles! With the ease of being able to get them from breeders and the usual guarantee that they will be healthy and parasite free there is no reason to collect from the wild. That comment about not keeping them as pets b/c it will harm wild populations is ridiculous. If it wasn't from captive breeding then yes there probably would be an issue. But the only collection from the wild that causes a problem are those collected as a food source...like a lot of the Asian countries do. THAT is a problem but it shouldn't be grouped with keeping them as pets!

The problem is that a lot of the commentary is from people who really have no idea what drives the business end. If people want an animal and it is not captive bred and readily available then someone will go out and catch them in the wild to meet the demand. Much better to encourage captive breeding programs. Better for the hobbyist, who gets a healthy parasite free animal, better for the animals in the wild, who are no longer desirable as pets, and thus hopefully are no longer collected in appreciable numbers.

Take bearded dragons for instance. Though initially they got into the US by being smuggled in many yrs ago I don't believe a single one as been taken out of Australia, as a pet, since then. And why? B/c there are tons of people that have bred them and have generations of healthy animals, for reasonable prices, so there is no need to go after wild beardies. It's been at least 20 yrs since beardies have been in the trade and they are very popular but their wild population is still doing well b/c of good and responsible captive breeding for the pet trade. It would only become an issue if these animals where no longer captive bred. That whole thing with captive animals being the cause of wild populations numbers decline is all a bunch of lies and deceit from radical groups like PeTa and HSUS. They want to totally stop the keeping of ANY animal, from reptiles to goldfish, dogs, cats and domesticated farm animals. Ideally they'd want us all to be brain dead moles living off of commercially processed goo!
